Mathematics

The Mathematics curriculum aims to develop students' mathematical thinking, understanding, competence and confidence in the application of mathematics, their creativity, enjoyment and appreciation of the subject, and their engagement in lifelong learning.

The subjects currently offered by the Mathematics faculty include:

YEAR 7 & 8 - Mandatory

  • Stage 4 - A consolidation of primary skills and preparation for the Stage 5 course
  • Project work in Term 4 is based on an educational excursion to Yr 8 Luna Park

YEAR 9 & 10 - Mandatory

The Stage 5 course provides several endpoints for the continuum of learning in mathematics. While all students are expected to achieve the outcomes of the Stage 5.1 level, a majority will proceed to master the outcomes at the 5.2 level and, of these, a selection will continue to achieve success in the 5.3 level.

  • Stage 5.1 Foundational mathematics for students not continuing to Stage 6 mathematics
  • Stage 5.2 Intermediary mathematics for students wishing to attempt the Mathematics General course in Stage 6.
  • Stage 5.3 A more in depth course preparing students for the Mathematics and Extension courses in Stage 6.

YEAR 11 & 12 - Higher School Certificate Courses

  • Mathematics Standard 1
  • Mathematics Standard 2
  • Mathematics (Extension 1 & Extension 2)

Teaching and learning in mathematics involves technology at all stages. Students are encouraged to demonstrate their knowledge using various forms of assessment. Assessment tasks include off-site assignments, computer research projects, production of instructional games as well as formal examinations. Students are encouraged to subscribe to the Maths online program to assist them in their home learning and comprehension.

Competitions for talented mathematicians

Students are encouraged to enter a range of mathematics competitions, according to their ability.  Excellent results have been achieved in competitions such as:

  • UNSW ICAS competition
  • Australian Mathematics Competition
  • Australian Intermediated Mathematics Olympiad.

Support for students who find mathematics difficult

A range of strategies are adopted to assist students who find mathematics challenging.
These include:

  • Maths Online – online learning support which includes animations to assist students. Students may subscribe for a small cost to have this available at home as well as at school.
  • Adapted curriculum – as mathematics involves a continuum of learning, students are assessed for their progress and the pace and method of delivery are adapted accordingly. Lessons may also include additional use of concrete materials and active learning strategies.

Primary school enrichment

The Mathematics faculty is actively involved in providing enrichment opportunities to visiting primary school students. Middle school students from KuHS mentor primary school students in a range of activities both in and outside the classroom.
